The 2005 Currie Cup had 14 teams taking part in it. They were put in two equal strength sections that were based upon the positions that each team had finished in the 2004 Currie Cup competition. Teams then played each other team in their section once.
The top 4 teams in each section then progressed to the Premier Division to play for the Currie Cup trophy. The other 3 teams from each section played in the First Division. No points were carried over.
In this second round of matches, teams played each of the teams in the other section twice, home and away. The top 2 teams in each section played off in the semi-finals to make the final.
