Super Rugby is the southern hemisphere's leading rugby competition, featuring teams from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Since 1996, teams from the three countries have been playing for the title. The competition started with 12 teams, increased to 14 teams and then increased again to 15 teams, with 5 teams from each nation. In 2016, 3 new teams were included to make a total of 18 teams participating in the competition. The 2018 Super Rugby competition had major changes made to it, not the least being a reduction of the number of teams from 18 to 15. In 2019 and 2020 the same format was used. |
Each team would play the other teams in their conference twice (home & away) and four of the teams in each of the other conferences, making a total of 16 matches. The conference winners and the next 5 best teams, regardless of which conference they come from, would move through to the Quarter-Finals.

The Super Rugby season was suspended indefinitely due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. |
