The British & Irish Lions, as the team is now known as, have been touring the Southern Hemisphere since 1888. In the early years they were not an official team but since 1910 the 4 home unions have sanctioned the tours. They have proved very popular tourists and now tour in 4 year cycles, rotating through the 3 countries of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
