In 2020 the Super Rugby season was postponed due to the worldwide COVID 19 pandemic. After 7 rounds had been played the competition was postponed indefinitely. In New Zealand there was a lockdown that curtailed all movement and activities. As the country moved out from this, the NZ Rugby Union announced a competition for the 5 NZ Super Rugby teams to play in to allow some rugby to be played. Under the guidelines in place at the time, the games were to be played in empty stadiums. However this changed a week before the start and fans were allowed into matches. |
The new competition will have some new rules in place to try making the games faster and more entertaining.
While there are no actual rule changes there will also be a focus on the breakdown area by the referees.
